Our Story

My name is Shemal Rajapakse, I’m the founder of CAP Certified.

CAP’s story begins with my five year old son who was desperate to play Fortnite. I knew he was too young and, as a founder of a technology company, I also knew the dangers faced by children online.

Keep our children safe.

I discovered most parental controls fall short of telling me whether my son would be talking to another child or an unknown adult. However, I’m also a realist, and the endless conversations about stranger danger and the need to keep him safe fell on his little deaf ears. As a parent, I want to give him everything, but I know this is not always possible.

I realised many other parents must also feel the same. Every night we thank the lucky stars we’ve managed to keep our children alive and safe, yet the fear they will be placed in danger is ever-present.

That day, I made a promise to my son: I would make the digital world a safe place for him to play with his friends. What could I, the CEO of a tech company, do to solve the problem?

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Over the past few years I have been working with digital experts in their field, as well as parents tragically affected by this issue such as Lorin LaFave whose son, Breck, lost his life to an online predator. Lorin’s campaigning to promote online safety is humbling.

Together we have created CAP Certified; a social enterprise with a mission is to eliminate grooming, abuse and bullying on digital platforms.

We are a member of the Online Safety Tech Industry Association, the industry body for UK organisations operating in the field of online safety.

CAP is supported by the Cambridge Social Ventures by Judge Business School, SetSquared Surrey and the Innovation Labs, Stowmarket.
